There are options to stay longer, so if this is something that you are interested in, check the UK visa and immigration website for further information. There is one exception; if you are from India and hold a valid Irish visa endorsed with BIVS (British Irish Visa Scheme), you can travel to the UK without a visa.

Types of visas for the United Kingdom

There are different types of visas for the UK and the one you need will depend on your reason for traveling there:

Step 6 – Visit the visa application center

On the day you visit the application center, remember the following things:

You must attend the appointment for your visa application. You cannot send someone in your place

    1. Arrive 15 minutes early
    2. Take the document checklist (which you would have received as part of your online application)
    3. Take a valid passport or travel document with at least 1 page that is blank on both sides
    4. Upload your documents yourself or use the document scanning service if you have purchased this

You will also submit your fingerprints and photograph. This is known as biometric information and is required for your visa application to be processed.

Step 7 – Track your application

Once you have submitted your application and documents and visited the visa application center, you can track your application. You will receive an email when a decision has been made and your passport has been returned to the visa application center. However, if you want more detailed tracking information, you can choose VFS Global’s SMS service.

Step 8 – Pick up your documents

You may collect your passport from the visa application center or you can arrange for it to be returned to you via courier. If you collect your document in person, you need to take the receipt issued by the visa application center and a form of Government identification.

You’ll get a letter with the result of your application. The letter will explain what you need to do next.

The outcome of your application will be either:

    1. Approved – your visa will be attached to your passport and will show the type of visa granted, the dates your visa is valid and any conditions you need to meet, for example, no work or unable to claim benefits. If you notice any errors with the visa, you must report it to UK visas and immigration immediately
    2. Rejected – you will receive an explanation as to why your application was refused and will explain whether you have the right to an administrative review or an immigration decision appeal

The following reasons may result in a rejected application:

    1. Missing documents – make sure you submit all the required documents
    2. Applying for the wrong type of visa – you need to be aware of the type of visa you need depending on your reason for traveling. Spend time getting to know the different types of visas before you apply and use the government resources to check
    3. Lack of funds – you must be able to pay for your trip yourself or prove that someone else will be supporting you financially
