    The UEFA Euro 2024 – How to apply for a Germany Schengen Visa

    The 2024 UEFA European Football Championship is due to take place in Germany from 14 June 2024 until 14 July 2024. 24 teams will take part in a bid to win the tournament with the winners playing against the winners of the 2024 Copa America winner next year.

    There are ten venues across Germany where the games will be played and if you are planning on visiting Germany to attend the matches, you may need a visa to be able to enter and stay in Germany for one match or for the duration of the championship. However long you plan to stay in Germany, this article will tell you everything you need to know about applying for a visa quickly and easily!

    Who needs a visa for Germany 

    Certain nationalities will need to apply for a Schengen visa to be able to enter and stay in any of the Schengen countries, including Germany. 

    If you are a citizen of the following countries do not need a visa to be able to enter Germany:

    If you do not come from any of the above countries, you will need a visa for Germany.

    Applying for a Germany Schengen Visa to attend the UEFA Euros 2024

    In order to apply for a visa for Germany, you must be able to prove that you are a national of the country you are applying from or have a legal right to reside in that country.

    Types of Visa for Germany

    There are 2 visas that you can apply for if you want to go to Germany:

    1. Schengen or short-stay visa – for tourism, visiting friends/family, transit and business for stays up to 90 days
    2. National or long-term visa  – for employment, study and residence for over 90 days

    If you are attending any of the football games between June and July 2024, a Schengen visa for tourism is the one you need to apply for. However, it is recommended to do your research before starting your application just so you know all the requirements of applying for a visa. 

    Visas are usually issued as: 

    1. Single entry – if you plan only to attend the Euros and then return home afterwards
    2. Double entry – if you plan to enter Germany, leave the country and return to Germany within the dates of your visa
    3. Multiple entry – if you plan to enter Germany multiple times within the dates of your visa

    Where to apply for a Germany Schengen visa

    There should be a German Embassy or Consulate General of Germany in the country you are applying from. There may even be one in the city or town where you live. Some countries will also have visa application centers near you. You shouldn’t have any trouble finding a visa office which can deal with your visa application. When you are ready, you will submit your application for processing to one of the following locations:

    1. VLS Global
    2. TLS Contact
    3. German Embassy or German Consulate General

    Regardless of where you apply, the decision about the visa application will be made by the embassy of Germany. If you are applying through one of the visa application centers, they will send your application to the embassy or consulate for processing and take no responsibility for making decisions. 

    How to apply for a Germany Schengen Visa

    You should apply for a Germany Schengen visa no later than 15 days before your intended departure date to allow plenty of time for the application to be processed. You can apply up to 6 months ahead, so don’t leave it too late.

    Visa applications are usually processed within 15 days, although sometimes it can take longer if further information or documents are required or during peak times such as the holiday season, so it’s best to apply as early as you can.

    Generally, there are a few step to follow when applying for a visa for Germany. These steps can vary depending on where you are applying, but this will give you an idea of what you need to do. The steps are:

    1. Check visa type
    2. Complete your application
    3. Book an appointment
    4. Submit your application
    5. Track your application
    6. Collect your passport

    Check visa type

    You can check that you are applying for the correct visa on the website of the visa office. If you choose the visa you want to apply for and read the information fully, you will be able to determine whether this is the right visa for you.

    Complete your application

    You will be able to complete your application either by downloading the form or completing it online. Either way, make sure you print and sign the form and take it with you when you submit your application.

    Book an appointment

    Making appointments with the embassy or visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself.     You can also make an appointment yourself. Each visa office will have a procedure for booking appointments. You can make your appointment in the following ways:

    1. Online booking system
    2. Email or phone

    Check on the website of the visa office you’re dealing with as to how to make your appointment. 

    Submit your application

    On the day of your appointment, make sure you get to the visa office on time. If you are late, you may have to reschedule your appointment and this could delay your travel plans. Remember to take your visa application as well as all supporting documents. If you forget, you may be asked to make a new appointment to return with the missing documents or you may face a rejected application. 

    You may have to answer any questions the visa officer may have and you will have to provide biometrics which is a photo and a scan of your fingerprints if you haven’t done so within the last 5 years.

    You will also pay the fee for your Germany visa which is currently €90. You can pay by debit or credit card or cash and the fee is payable in the local currency. The visa application center may also charge a service fee and you can find out more information on their websites. All fees are non-refundable. 

    Track your application

    If you have applied through a visa application center, you can use their tracking tools to find out the status of your application. 

    If you applied at a TLS visa application center: Use the TLS online application tracking tool. You will need to log in to your TLS account to use this

    If you applied at a VFS visa application center: Use the VFS online application tracking tool. You will need the reference number that was given to you and your last name or date of birth

    Collect your passport

    Once your application has been processed, you can either collect your passport or have it returned to you by courier. Check with the visa office you are dealing with as to what options for getting your passport back are available to you. 

    The decision will be either: 

    1. Approved – you will find your visa inside your passport 
    2. Rejected – your visa application has been rejected for a reason which you will be notified of and you will also have the right to appeal within a given timescale 

    Documents Required

    You will find document checklists on the websites of the embassy or consulate or visa application centers and you can refer to these when you are getting your visa application supporting documents ready.

    1. Passport or travel document – valid for at least three months after the planned date of return, issued within the last 10 years and 2 free pages
    2. Application form dated and signed 
    3. ID photograph – usually 1 or 2 photos depending on the visa office
    4. Proof of your legal residency in this country such as a residence permit or valid visa etc
    5. Pre-booked return ticket and/or itinerary or reservation confirmation of an organized trip
    6. Schengen Travel health insurance to cover at least €30,000 for emergency medical care, hospitalization and repatriation (including in the event of death)
    7. Hotel booking or other proof of accommodation OR invitation letter with your host’s ID 
    8. Proof of sufficient funds – last 3 bank statements, pay slips, pension statements 
    9. Evidence of your intention to return to your home country after your stay

    Additional documents may also be requested by the visa office.
