The 2024 Copa America – US Visa Application Process and Requirements

It’s a new year and the countdown is on for the 2024 Copa America championship – the 48th year of the 4 yearly international men’s soccer games. For the second time, the USA will host this exciting competition! The tournament starts on June 20 2024 and will run until July 14 2024 when the final will be played at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

For football fans all over the world, there is plenty of time to get your visa sorted!

For US citizens, there is no need to have a visa, but for other nationalities who live outside of the US or are living in the US but not citizens, a US visa will be needed to enter and stay in the country.

    Visa Waiver Program

The US government has a program in place called the Visa Waiver Program that allows certain nationalities to travel to the United States for the purposes of tourism and business for up to 90 days. The countries eligible are:

Andorra, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brunei, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Ireland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, San Morino, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, United Kingdom

Citizens of the above countries are still required to have travel authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) which can be applied for online at least 3 days before departure to the USA.

Requirements for the US Visa Waiver Program

There are a number of requirements that must be met in order to be eligible for the Visa Waiver Program. These are:

You must have a valid biometric passport which is valid for 6 months passed the date of departure from the USA

    1. Not had a rejected US visa in the past
    2. Met all other entry rules for previous entries to the USA
    3. No previous convictions or arrests which led to imprisonment of 5 years or more
    4. Must not be a security threat in the USA
    5. Should not be reliant on the US on the grounds of health
    6. Must be entering the USA for the purpose of tourism, business or transit only
    7. Must have ties to the home country and be able to prove return

Type of visa to attend Copa America 2024

If you are a citizen of a country that does not benefit from the Visa Waiver Program, you will need to apply for a visa. For attending the 2024 Copa America Championship, the visa you will need to apply for is a non-immigrant visa which is suitable for tourism.

This visa is usually issued as single entry or multiple/unlimited entries:

    1. Single entry – can be used once only
    2. Multiple/unlimited entries – can be used as many times as you wish before the visa expires

When to Apply for a US Visa

Processing times vary from embassy to embassy, but you can check online how long it will take based on where you are applying. You can also check how long it takes to book an appointment to submit your application.

As a rule, visa applications could take 3-6 weeks to be processed, although some could take longer. You should apply in plenty of time to allow enough time.

Where to Apply for your US Visa

You should apply for your visa at the US embassy or consulate located in your country. You can research online where the closest one to you is. Embassies will only deal with applications within their jurisdiction, so bear that in mind when choosing one to deal with.

How to apply for a US visa

Before you begin your application, you should take a look at the US Department of State’s website where you will find all the information you need about applying for a US visa.

If you plan to go to the Copa America soccer games, you will need to apply for a visitor visa (B-2).

There are a number of steps to applying for a visa, but these may vary depending on which embassy you are applying at. You should check what these are at the embassy in your home country where you will make your application. Generally, the steps will be:

    1. Complete the online visa application
    2. Upload your photo
    3. Schedule an interview
    4. Gather required documentation
    5. Attend your interview
    6. Complete the online visa application

The visa application (Form DS-160) can be completed online. You can do this on the US Department of State’s website. You can also find more information to help you complete the form should you need it. You must do two things:

    1. Complete the form online
    2. Print the application form to take to your interview

    Upload your photo

When you complete your application, you will also upload a photo of yourself. This photo must meet certain requirements, especially if you are taking it yourself. These requirements can be found on the US Department of State’s website

    Schedule an interview

An appointment for your visa interview can be made at the US embassy in your home country. Remember, you may have to wait for an appointment, especially during peak times, but you can check wait times online.

    Gather required documentation

Before gathering your documents for your visa application, it’s a good idea to check the website of the embassy in your home country for specific application requirements.

    Documents required are:

    1. Passport – valid for at least 6 months after departure from the USA after your trip
    2. Form DS-160 Visa Application Form – completed online and printed
    3. Fee receipt – if you are required to pay before your interview
    4. Photo – uploaded as part of your online application
    5. Proof of the purpose of your trip such as entry tickets, itinerary, transport tickets
    6. Proof of return flight reservation or other proof that you intend to leave the US after your trip
    7. Proof of financial means to cover all costs of your trip

If you miss any of the required documents, it could result in a rejected application, so take the time to research everything that is needed for your application.

    Attend your interview

When you attend your interview, the following things will happen:

    1. The visa officer will ask questions to find out whether you are eligible for the visitor visa
    2. You will provide biometric data which is a scan of your fingerprints

The outcome of the above steps will be:

    1. The visa officer will approve the visa
    2. The visa officer will reject the visa – this means that you are not eligible for the visa. You may be asked to provide further documentation which could mean that the decision will be overturned and your application accepted
    3. The visa officer may tell you that your application needs further processing to arrive at a decision

    US Visa Fee

The current visa fee for a non-immigrant visa for tourism purposes is $185.00. There may be a visa issuance fee to pay in addition, but this depends on your nationality. You can check whether this applies to you on the US Department of State’s website. All fees are paid in the local currency and are non-refundable.

Once your visa has been approved, you will need to make arrangements for your passport to be returned to you. Check with your local embassy whether they provide courier services or talk to them about the best way to pick your documents up.

Then, all you need to do is to countdown the days until your exciting trip to see the Copa America 2024 in action!
