In 2019, Schengen States processed 275,239 visa applications for Sweden. 33,879 were not issued. The Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok received 20,864 applications and issued 18,523, however, it is unclear how many of these applications originated in the Philippines.
Applying for a Sweden Schengen Visa from the Philippines
If you are a Filipino citizen and you want to go to Sweden, you will need to apply for a visa. This also applies if you are living in the Philippines legally and you are in possession of a visa.
VFS Global is authorized by the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok to accept visa applications on their behalf. It is the embassy who makes the decision and your application will be sent to the office in Bangkok once you have submitted it to VFS Global who has offices in Manila or Cebu.
You will get a decision within 15 days from the date the embassy in Bangkok receives your application. However, it could take as many as 45 days if the embassy needs any more information and/or documents from you. You may apply up to 6 months before your trip, so don’t leave it too late.
Types of Schengen visas offered at VFS Global/the Embassy of Sweden
There are different visas you may apply for and you must ensure you get the correct one to avoid problems entering Sweden. The right visa will depend on why you are going to Sweden and the duration of your trip.
- Schengen visa – this will allow you to stay in Sweden for up to 90 days for tourism, business, attending a conference/sports event or visiting family/friends
- National visa – this will allow you to stay in Sweden for over 90 days for work or study etc. You will also require a work permit for some visas (see the embassy’s website for more information)

There are 5 steps to applying for a visa for Sweden:

Step 1 – Know your visa
Before you begin your application, spend time on the websites of the embassy and VFS Global to read up on information about which visa you need to apply for. If you apply for the incorrect visa, it could lead to your application being rejected.
Step 2 – Complete your application form
The next step is to complete your application form. Go to VFS Global’s home page, scroll down to “Download Forms” and click on the link for the application form:

Step 3 – Make an appointment
Making appointments with the embassy, consulate or visa application centre is generally free and can be done yourself. Step 4 – Prepare your documents
There are checklists available on the embassy’s website, so take a look at what is required for your type of visa. You should sign the checklist and submit it along with your application and other documents. Alternatively, this information is available on VFS Global’s website too.
You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents, so don’t forget to do that too!
Documents include:
- Schengen Visa Application Form – must be completed and signed
- One recent color passport photograph
- Passport – valid for 3 months after departure from the Schengen area and must have at least 2 unused pages
- Copy of original passport – biodata page must be attached to your application
- Previous passports and past visa stamps to the Schengen countries (if any)
- Paid travel medical insurance– should be valid for all Schengen states and cover the entire period of your intended stay or transit. It should cover the cost of emergency treatment and transport home from medical reasons. The minimum coverage shall be EUR 30,000
- Proof of identity – copy of name change certificate (if applicable)
- Proof of occupation – If employed: company registration and statement of employment, indicating the number of vacation days granted, the position in the company, and the monthly salary; If self-employed: evidence of business ownership
- For minors – birth certificate, proof of custody (e.g. marriage certificate, divorce certificate, registration of residence)
- Reservation for a hotel or other proof of accommodation for the duration of the entire stay
- Itinerary of the planned trip if several countries are visited
- Proof of roundtrip airline ticket reservation
- If travelling on an organized trip – a certificate or voucher from a travel agency or tour operator confirming the booking of an organized tour
- Proof of financial means – bank statements covering the last 3 (three) months or other proof of sufficient means of subsistence for the entire journey and the duration of stay
- Copy of real estate property (title-deed), marriage certificate, birth certificate of children (if applicable)
- Alien Certificate of Registration and re-entry permit – for non-Filipino residents
- Proof of relationship – invitation letter and host’s passport and/or letter of guarantee (if applicable)
- Proof of sponsorship
If you’re planning to obtain your flight reservation for visa without paying for the ticket, all you have to do is follow the 3 simple steps below:

- Submit the travel details and make the payment online
- Receive flight itinerary in email
Attending your appointment
As part of the visa application procedure, you will need to provide biometric data which includes electronic fingerprint data. If you have provided this information within the last 5 years, you do not have to do it again.
Please make sure that your name matches the one used on the appointment system, otherwise, your application will not be accepted. In addition, carry your appointment letter with you on the scheduled date & time to VFS Global and present it at the reception area. Lastly, make sure you arrive at the VFS Global 15 minutes prior to your appointment time to avoid having to reschedule.

Once your appointment is over and you have handed in your application, it will be sent to the embassy. You may be contacted if the embassy needs you to provide any more information and/or documents. They may ask you questions to verify what you have stated. All you need to do is simply answer honestly.

Once a decision has been reached, you can either collect your passport from VFS Global or have it returned via courier for an additional fee.
The decision will be either:
- Approved – your visa will be attached inside your passport
- Rejected – this would be for a specific reason
Common reasons for visa rejections include:
- The purpose of your trip is not clear – it is important to be clear about why you want to travel to Sweden. You can do this with the information and/or documents you provide or if you have to answer further questions about your application
- The embassy has made an error – mistakes can be made, so if you think the visa official has made an error, then you must speak to the embassy immediately
- Travel insurance covers less than the required amount – the travel insurance you purchase for your trip must cover at least 30,000 Euros. You should check the details of the cover before you submit your application
- Your residency cannot be confirmed – you must provide proof that you have a right to live in the Philippines, especially if you are a non-Filipino resident
