Applying for a Sweden Schengen Visa from Nigeria
If you are going to Sweden, you will need a visa. As long as you can prove your residency status in Nigeria, you can easily apply from there.
The Embassy of Sweden processes visa applications, but you will submit your application to VFS Global based in Abuja or Lagos.
You may apply for your visa up to 6 months in advance and applications are usually processed in 15 days.

Step 1 – Identify visa type

To begin your application, go to VFS Global’s website under “Step 2” and click on the link to download the application form:

Supporting documents
There are document checklists on VFS Global’s website which you can find under “documents required”. Make sure you know what the requirements are before you submit your application. You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents!
Documents include:
- A completed application form and fully completed Family appendix Questionnaire for visa. The application form needs to be signed twice
- Proof of payment of the visa fee (s)
- Passport photograph not older than three months
- Two colored copies of your passport data page
- Passport with at least 2 blank pages and be valid for at least 3 months past your departure date and must have been issued within the last 10 years
- Flight reservation for return flight specifying entry and exit dates from Sweden
- A signed letter from your employer stating continuing employment after duration of vacation.
- Proof of accommodation – during your entire visit such as a Hotel reservation
- For children under 18: parents’ ID or parental written consent & documentation from school confirming attendance
- If you are going to visit relatives or friends you must submit: letter of invitation from the host
- Business Appendix form if traveling for business
- Valid Nigerian resident permit
- Proof of funds available Bank statements x 3 months. If someone is paying for your stay, a letter from the person confirming this should be submitted
- Travel medical insurance a one-page document stating that the insurance is to cover medical costs of at least EUR 30,000 and be valid for the whole duration of stay and in all Schengen states

Step 3 – Book an appointment
Making appointments with the embassy or visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself. The visa fee should only be paid at the time of submission of the documents at the application center. The service fee needs to be paid while booking the appointment online. All fees are non-refundable.
Step 5 – Visit a visa application center
When you visit VFS Global for your appointment, there are a few things to remember:
- Aim to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment
- You must attend the appointment in-person
- Take a copy of your visa application, as well as a valid passport or travel document
- Take all supporting documentation (originals and copies)
At the center, you will hand over your application and supporting documents and provide biometric information (fingerprints and photograph).
As part of the application process, you may be asked questions if the embassy needs further information. Typical questions include:
- Are you going to any other countries apart from Sweden?
- When will you return to your home country?
- Do you know anyone in the Schengen Area?
- What do you do in Nigeria?

Step 6 – Track your application
You can track the progress of your application by going to VFS Global’s website and clicking on the link under “Step 6 – Track your application”:

Step 7 – Collect your passport
After a visa application decision has been made, you can pick up your passport from VFS Global or have your passport returned to you by courier for an additional fee. If you collect your passport, remember to take the receipt issued by VFS and some ID.
The decision will be either:
- Approved – you will find your visa attached to one of the pages in your passport
- Rejected – you can appeal the decision. Speak to VFS Global for more information
Common rejection reasons include:
- No invitation letter – if you are invited to Sweden by an individual or a company, you must provide an invitation letter
- Letter from employer not included – you must provide a letter from your employer to state you will be returning to your normal job upon return to Nigeria
- Passport does not have any blank pages – your passport must have at least 2 blank pages for the visa to be attached. If it doesn’t, you need to get a new one before applying for your visa
- You have a previous valid visa – if you have previously applied for a visa, it may still be valid, so check before applying for a new one

COVID Regulations
Entry requirements
The Swedish Government has decided that foreign nationals entering Sweden from outside the Nordic region must have tested negative for COVID-19, be vaccinated against the disease, or have recovered from COVID-19.
Entry from a non-EEA country
- Must be covered by at least one exemption to the general entry ban (e.g. reside in an exempted country) or be fully vaccinated and hold a vaccine certificate from an approved country
- If covered by an exemption, a negative test result documenting that the holder does not have an ongoing covid-19 infection is required, max 72 hours old, or a vaccine certificate
Test after arrival
The following categories do not in general need to get tested after arrival to Sweden:
- have travelled inside the Nordics
- is fully vaccinated with two doses since at least two weeks
- has had covid-19 during the last six months
- children under six years old
As a general rule, foreigners traveling to Sweden from a non-EEA country will be denied entry and rejected. There are exemptions for EEA citizens and a select number of identified countries outside EEA. Those covered by an exemption still need to present a negative covid-19 test.
