Applying for a Portugal Schengen Visa from India
If you are applying for a visa to go to Portugal, you must be a citizen of India or have a legal right to live in India.
If you live in Goa, Maharashtra, Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, the Consulate General of Portugal in Goa is responsible for making decisions about visa applications.
If you live anywhere else in India, the Embassy of Portugal in New Delhi is responsible for making decisions about visa applications.
As part of your application, you must prove that you have lived in India for more than six months.
The embassy and consulate have outsourced the receipt of visa applications to VFS Global which means that when you come to apply for your visa, you will submit your application to your closest VFS Global office (see below for contact details).
Visa applications are usually processed within 15 days, so you should submit your application at least 15 days before you travel. However, it could take longer to get a decision if the embassy has to make further checks, so it’s best to apply as soon as possible. You can apply up to 6 months in advance, so don’t leave it too late.
Types of Schengen visas offered at The Embassy of Portugal in India
There are 2 types of visas you can apply for and it is your responsibility to choose the right one:
- Short-term visa (Schengen) – for a maximum of 90 days for business, conference, visiting relatives/friends, tourism etc
- Long-term visa (National) – for stays over 90 days for employment, study/training, family reunion, medical treatment etc. See the embassy’s website for more information
