Applying for a Norway Schengen Visa from Nigeria
If you are thinking of going to Norway and you are a citizen of Nigeria, you will have to apply for a visa.
If you live in Nigeria, Togo, Niger and Benin, you may submit your application to VFS Global in Abuja or Lagos or VFS Global in Accra. The cases will be sent to the Norwegian Embassy in Accra, Ghana, which is responsible for processing applications from these countries.
The processing time for applications for Schengen visas is up to 15 days from when they are received at the Embassy. It could take longer if more information is needed. The processing time for visa applications submitted in Nigeria will need an additional seven days due to shipping to Accra. It is therefore recommended to apply at least three weeks before your trip.
Types of Schengen visas offered at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Nigeria
There are different visas available and the one you need will depend on why you are going to Norway and how long you are going for.
- Visitors Visa – this type of visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days for holidays, visits to friends/family and business

How Can I Apply for a Norway Schengen Visa from VFS Global?
To apply for your Norway visa, there are 7 easy steps to help you:

Step 1 – Identify visa type
The first thing to do is to make sure you are applying for the correct visa. Go to VFS Global’s website and click on: “Start now” under “Apply for a visa”:

Step 2 – Begin your application
To begin your application, go to VFS Global’s website under “Step 2” and click on the link for the online application portal. All applications must be registered on this website:
You will be directed to the UDI’s online application portal where you can register your application and complete the relevant forms. You will need to create an account before you start:
You are required to provide an online payment receipt confirming online registration and payment of the visa fee when submitting an application at VFS Global. Online payments can be made by credit/debit card (MasterCard or Visa).
Supporting documents
There is a checklist of documents required on the embassy’s website. Before applying, get to know the requirements to save any disappointment further along the application process. You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents, so don’t forget to do that too!
Documents include:
- Fee receipt and cover letter from the online application portal
- Passport photograph not older than three months, white background, size 3.5×4.5 cm
- Visa application form
- Valid passport or official travel document and copy of all used pages – must have at least 2 blank pages and be valid for at least 3 months past your departure date and must have been issued within the last 10 years
- Valid residence permit – if applicable
- Proof of accommodation – during your entire visit (Hotel reservation / private arrangement)
- Copy of personal identification documentation (ID, birth certificate)
- Documents confirming your civil status (e.g. single, married, divorced, widow(er)
- Flight reservation for a round trip ticket
- Proof of funds available – bank statements (company or individual) for the last 3 months
- If you are employed: last three payslips, your employment contract or recent employer statement & approval for holidays
- If you are a company owner or self-employed: Certificate of registration of the company & statement of taxes payment
- If you are retired: Pension statements
- For minors: written consent from parent/guardian & copy of their ID
- Travel medical insurance to cover the entire period of intended stay. You should be covered for at least EUR 30 000, including expenses for repatriation for medical reasons, treatment in medical emergencies and/or emergency hospital treatment, and death
- Trip schedule / Detailed itinerary to include the duration, locations and transportation if traveling to different countries in the Schengen area
- Letter of invitation if being invited to Norway by an individual or a company

Step 3 – Book an appointment
Making appointments with the embassy or visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself. Step 4 – Pay your fees
You would have already paid your visa fee on the application portal when you registered and completed your application.

VFS Global also charge a service fee of 12,600 Naira courier fee of 7,050 Naira which needs to be paid at the application center in Lagos or Abuja. You should have your passport to hand when paying the fees. The fees are non-refundable.
Step 5 – Visit a visa application center
When you visit VFS Global for your appointment, there are a few things to remember:
- Aim to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment
- You must attend the appointment in-person
- Take a copy of your visa application, as well as a valid passport or travel document
- Take all supporting documentation (originals and copies)
At the center, you will hand over your application and supporting documents, pay the fees and submit your biometric information (fingerprints and photograph). Your application will not be processed without this information unless you have provided biometrics within the last 5 years.
As part of the application process, you may be asked questions if the embassy needs further information. Typical questions include:
- What are you going to do in Norway?
- How long are you staying in Norway?
- What is your job in Nigeria?
- I don’t think you will return to your home country. What do you say to that?

Step 6 – Track your application
You will receive an email from VFS Global when your passport has been returned to the center. You can also choose to have an SMS sent for an additional fee. However, you can track your application’s progress. Go to VFS Global’s website and click on the link under “Step 6 – Track your application”:

Step 7 – Collect your passport
After a visa application decision has been made, you can pick up your documents from VFS Global or have your documents returned to you by courier for an additional fee.
If you’re collecting your documents, please take the receipt issued by VFS Global and your ID. When collecting your passport, please make sure to check that your envelope contains your documents, including originals.
If you have been granted a visa, it will be affixed to your passport. You should check that the visa information is correct. If not, you should tell VFS Global or the embassy as soon as possible.
If your visa application has been rejected, you can appeal the decision
Common rejection reasons include:
- Passport is not valid – if your passport is invalid (see above requirements), you must get a new one before applying for your visa
- You provided a false document – the embassy will know if any of your documents are fake, so don’t do this. It could prevent you from traveling anywhere in the future
- You did not provide a residence permit – if you are living in Nigeria, but you were not born there, you must provide proof that you have a legal right to live there
- Travel insurance only covers 5,000 Euros – your travel insurance must cover a minimum of 30,000 Euros

- You have to take a test on arrival or within 24 hours after arrival at entry points without test stations

- Travelers from third-party countries, including Nigeria, remain subject to a duty to quarantine
- Children under 18 years of age don’t have to quarantine
- All adult travelers must take a test no more than 24 hours prior to arriving in Norway, in addition to a new test on arrival or within 24 hours after arrival
- Children don’t need to take a test prior to arriving in Norway, but do need to take a test on arrival. Children under 16 might be exempt if it would be unreasonably difficult for them to take the test
