Embassies around the world received 4,295 visa applications for Malta in 2021. 691 were rejected. The Embassy of Malta in New Delhi received 72 applications and rejected 8.
Applying for a Malta Schengen Visa from India
If you are planning on visiting Malta, you can apply from India if:
- You are an Indian citizen or,
- If you have a residence permit or visa to live in India, if you are a non-Indian national
The Embassy of Malta has outsourced the receipt of visa applications to VFS Global. This means that you will submit your application to one of the VFS offices located across India (see below for contact details). The embassy retains the responsibility of processing visa applications and they will reach a decision within 15 days.
It is your responsibility to apply in plenty of time and you may apply up to 6 months before you travel, so don’t leave it too late.
Types of Schengen visas offered at The Embassy of Malta in India
There are different visas you can apply for:
- Short Stay Visa: maximum stay of 90 days for the purpose of business, conference, visiting relatives/friends, tourism & religious reasons
- Long Stay Visa: more than 90 days for the purpose of employment, study/training, family reunion etc
How Can I Apply for a Malta Schengen Visa from VFS Global in India?
As mentioned above, you will submit your application to VFS Global, but you must follow these steps in order:

Step 1 – Identify visa type
Go to VFS Global’s website and click on “Start now”:

Step 2 – Begin your application
Go to “step 2” and click on the link:

Click on the link to download the form (s). You will need to print, complete and sign it and take it with you when you submit your application to VFS Global.
Step 3 – Book an appointment
Making appointments with the embassy, consulate or visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself. Step 4 – Pay your fees

- The visa fees are payable in Indian Rupees and can be paid in cash/Visa/Master Card/Rupay
- There is also a service charge of INR 2218/- and a convenience fee of INR 160/-
- Please note, some VFS Global offices only send your documents back to you via courier, for which you have to pay an extra INR 650/-
- All fees are non-refundable and are inclusive of Goods and Service Tax – SGST @ 9% and CGST @ 9%

Step 5 – Visit a visa application center
On the day of your appointment:
- Arrive at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. If you miss your appointment, you will need to book a new appointment
- You cannot send someone in your place, you must attend in person
- Take a printed copy of your visa application, 2D barcoded sheets (2 copies), passport bio page (2 copies), as well as a valid passport or travel document with at least 2 pages that are blank on both sides
- Take all supporting documentation (originals and copies)
- At the center, you will also need to provide biometric information collection. A digital finger scanner collects images of all 10 digits, and you will have a digital photo taken. Without biometrics, your visa application will not be processed

Step 6 – Track your application
Go to “step 6” and click on the link to track your application online:

Step 7 – Collect your passport
When your application has been processed, you can either:
- Pick up your documents from VFS Global
- Have your documents returned to you by courier (if available)
Please check with the office where you submit your application for the options available to collect your documents.
If you are collecting your documents, you will need to take the receipt issued by VFS Global and some ID.
The decision will be either:
- Accepted – you will find your visa attached to one of the pages in your passport
- Rejected – if your application is rejected, you can appeal the decision within 15 days
There are different reasons why an application may get rejected:
- No justification for the purpose of stay – you must be clear as to why you are going to Malta and you can do this by providing specific documents such as a travel itinerary, proof of study or a work contract etc
- You have already been to the Schengen Zone for more than 90 days – you are only able to stay in the Schengen Area for a maximum of 90 days within the last 180 days
- No proof of travel medical insurance – you must take out travel medical insurance for your trip and you must provide proof
- No proof of financial means – you must show that you can afford your trip by providing salary slips, bank statements etc
Documents Required
Go to VFS Global’s website for document checklists. You should familiarize yourself with the requirements for your visa application because they are different for each type of visa. You should also submit photocopies along with original documents.
Documents include:
- Application form duly filled, dated and signed
- One recent passport-size photograph in colour on white background. Please do not staple the photo to the application form (see full photograph specifications)
- Passport/travel document valid for at least 3 months beyond the date of return, issued within the last 10 years, not valid for more than 10 years and with at least 2 blank pages available
- Previous passport also required
- Overseas medical travel insurance valid for all Schengen countries for the whole duration of your stay with a minimum cover of 30,000 Euros for all risks like accident, illness, medical emergency, evacuation, etc)
- Confirmed travel itinerary with travel dates (with return flights for courses less than 91 days) OR issued E–ticket. Once the visa is approved, a confirmed return ticket may be requested prior to visa being issued
- Proof of accommodation such as a confirmed hotel booking or ‘Declaration of Proof’ completely filled in, signed by the host accompanied by host’s Malta ID/passport
- Proof of sufficient financial means to cover all expenses during the entire period of travel. A letter from the bank stating the available balance; Bank statements for the last 6 months; ‘Declaration of Proof’
- Minors under the age of 18 – signature of parent’s on all pages of the application; notarized ‘No Objection Certificate’
- Adhaar Card
- Confirmed Travel Itinerary for travel to Malta
- Invitation letter from employer stating professional status of applicant and details of the work to be carried out in Malta
- Signed employment contract, certified true copy by a Maltese Notary Public
- Identity Malta letter confirming that the request for work permit has been accepted
- Letter of Acceptance from the educational institution in Malta

COVID Regulations
From 6th June 2022, persons aged 12 years and over are permitted to travel to Malta without undergoing quarantine as long as they provide either:
- Proof of Vaccination
- Proof of Recovery stating that no more than 180 days have passed since date of the first positive test (and no more than 180 days prior to arrival)
- Test Certificate
If you cannot provide one of the above, you must quarantine for 7 days.
