If you are a citizen of Nigeria, you will need to apply for a visa for Latvia. If you are not a citizen of Nigeria but can prove you have legal residency, you can still apply for a visa to go to Latvia from Nigeria.
The Embassy of Sweden processes visa applications, but you will submit your application to VFS Global based in Abuja or Lagos.

Step 1 – Identify visa type

Supporting documents
There are document checklists on VFS Global’s website which you can find under “documents required”. Make sure you know what the requirements are before you submit your application. You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents!
Documents include:
- A completed application form and fully completed Family appendix Questionnaire for visa. The application form needs to be signed twice
- Proof of payment of the visa fee (s)
- Passport photograph not older than three months
- Two colored copies of your passport data page
- Passport with at least 2 blank pages and be valid for at least 3 months past your departure date and must have been issued within the last 10 years
- Flight reservation for return flight stating the entry and departure dates from Latvia
- A signed letter from your employer stating continuing employment after duration of vacation.
- Proof of accommodation – during your entire visit such as a hotel booking
- For children under 18: parents’ ID or parental written consent & documentation from school confirming attendance
- If you are going to visit relatives or friends you must submit: invitation letter from the host
- Business Appendix form if traveling for business
- Valid Nigerian resident permit
- Proof of funds – bank statements x 3 months or a letter to confirm someone else is paying for your trip
- Travel medical insurance – insurance is to cover medical costs of at least EUR 30,000 and be valid for the whole duration of stay and in all Schengen states

Step 3 – Book an appointment
Making appointments with the embassy or visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself. The visa fee should be paid when you submit your documents at VFS Global. The service fee needs to be paid while booking the appointment online. All fees are non-refundable.
Step 5 – Visit a visa application center
When you visit VFS Global for your appointment, there are a few things to remember:
- Aim to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment
- You must attend the appointment in-person
- Take a copy of your visa application, as well as a valid passport or travel document
- Take all supporting documentation (originals and copies)
At the center, you will hand over your application and supporting documents and provide biometric information (fingerprints and photograph).
As part of the application process, you may be asked questions if the embassy needs further information.

After a visa application decision has been made, you can pick up your passport from VFS Global or have your passport returned to you by courier. See VFS Global’s website for additional services available. If you collect your passport, remember to take the receipt issued by VFS and some ID.
The decision will be either:
- Approved – you will find your visa attached to one of the pages in your passport
- Rejected – you can appeal the decision. Speak to VFS Global for more information
Common rejection reasons include:
- No bank statements – you must provide the last 3 bank statements as part of your visa application
- Passport is not valid – you must have a valid passport (see above). If not, you must obtain a new one before applying for a visa
- Application form is not signed – remember to check whether the application form is fully completed and signed
- Lack of funds – you must be able to afford your trip or prove someone else is paying, so submit the correct documents

COVID Regulations
Entry requirements
As from 2 December 2021, air travelers entering Latvia, including those who have been vaccinated or have recovered from COVID, are offered to voluntarily undergo free-of-charge COVID-19 testing in Riga International Airport.
All persons traveling to Latvia must fill out an electronic form on the Covidpass.lv website not earlier than 48 hours before entering Latvia and provide the requested information concerning vaccination, testing, or recovery from COVID-19.
Unvaccinated travelers must take:
- A PCR test 72 hours before boarding the carrier’s vehicle or entering Latvia, or
- An antigen test taken not earlier than 48 hours before boarding the carrier’s vehicle or entering Latvia
- Register for a PCR test online and take a test at the nearest testing station within 24 hours
- Self-isolate lasts for 10 days. Self-isolation may be interrupted if you take a PCR test on the 7th day after departure from a high risk or a very high risk country, and the test result is negative
