    Sweden visa applications are processed by the Embassy of Denmark in Ottawa. The embassy does not receive visa applications, instead, you may submit your application to any of the VFS Global located in Canada.

    There are 3 types of visas you may apply for:

    1. Schengen visa – type C: If you are traveling for tourism, business, or visiting family or friends for up to 90 days

    3. National visa – type D: if you are going for longer than 90 days for employment, study, research, family reunification or residence

    Processing times depend on how many applications are being dealt with at certain times of the year. Expect longer processing times in May, June, July, August and December.

    You can submit your application no earlier than 90 days before your departure date. It’s advisable to apply at least 18 – 30 days prior to your trip because it can take up to 14 days to get an appointment with VFS Global. Processing of your application will not begin until it arrives at the embassy, so you should allow an extra 2-4 days.

    Normal processing time at the embassy is 15 calendar days although it could take as many as 60 days, so apply as early as you can.

    Step 2: How to Make an appointment

    Making appointments with the embassy, consulate or visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself.     Step 3: Prepare your documents

    On the embassy’s website, you’ll find a list of documents which you need to submit. Remember, each type of visa has different requirements, so make sure you know what to provide when you attend your appointment.

    You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents, so don’t forget to do that too!

    Documents include:

    1. Visa application form – completed and signed
    2. Passport photographs
    3. Cover letter
    4. Receipt for fee
    5. Passport  – must be valid for at least three months after the date of departure from the Schengen zone, at least two empty pages and issued no more than 10 years ago
    6. Passport ID page, previous Schengen visas (including all entry and exit stamps) for the last 5 years, as well as any valid UK and American visas
    7. Permanent residence card or Canada visa valid for at least 90 days after your return date
    8. Valid provincial health card with expiry date
    9. Travel/flight reservation and/or itinerary
    10. Proof of Schengen travel insurance – minimum €30,000 coverage, no deductible, for repatriation in case of illness and death
    11. Proof of funds such as bank statements for the last 3 months. If your trip is self-financed: $95 per day; If your accommodation is covered: $35 per day; If all costs are covered: $10 per day
    12. Proof of accommodation such as a hotel reservation
    13. Invitation letter stating the exact dates of the visit along with the inviting person’s passport data page and residence permit
    14. A letter of consent (for minors) along with the parent/guardian’s passport and minor’s birth certificate
    15. Employer’s letter confirming your start date and continued employment. If you are self-employed: business registration or if you are a student: letter of enrolment from school/university stating the start and end date of your studies

    When you attend your appointment:

    1. Arrive early – if you are late, you will have to make a new appointment
    2. Remember all your documents – if you forget anything, it could result in a rejected visa application
    3. Dress smartly – don’t turn up in shorts as this could affect the outcome of your application

    If this is your first time applying for a Schengen visa, you will provide biometric data. If you have previously provided a scan of your fingerprints and a photo, the data can be reused within 5 years.
