Slovakia Schengen Visa
In 2018, 26,797 Slovakia Schengen visas were processed by Schengen states worldwide. 1,118 (4.2%) were rejected. The Embassy of Slovakia in Ottawa processed 23 applications and rejected 2 (8.7%).
Applying for a Schengen Visa from Canada
Canadian citizens are permitted to visit Slovakia without a visa for up to 90 days. If you are not a Canadian citizen, you must apply for a visa before you arrive in Slovakia. However, you must prove that you are legally living in Canada by providing your permanent residence card or a valid visa when you submit your application.
Your application will be submitted to the Embassy of Slovakia in Ottawa. This is the only visa office in Canada that deals with Schengen visas.
Types of Schengen Visas Offered at the Embassy of Slovakia in Ottawa
There are 3 types of visa that you can apply for:

Schengen Visa Application Process at the Embassy of Slovakia in Ottawa
Visa applications are processed within 15 days and, in exceptional cases, it could take up to 60 days. If you are a citizen of the following countries, expect a decision within 10 days:
- Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Montenegro, Macedonia, Moldova, the Russian Federation, Serbia and Ukraine

Step 3: Prepare your documents
There is a list of documents on the embassy’s website, so it’s a good idea to get to know what you need to provide when applying for your visa. Do this before you start to prepare your documents as this will save you time later!
You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents, so don’t forget to do that too!
Documents include:
- Visa application form filled in and signed
- 1 passport photograph
- Passport – must be valid for at least three months after the date of departure from the Schengen zone, at least two empty pages and issued no more than 10 years ago
- Proof of legal residence in Canada – Residence permit or Canadian visa valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area
- Travel reservation – Flight (roundtrip)/travel reservations or other proof of intended transport and full itinerary of all Schengen and non-Schengen countries
- Proof of Schengen travel medical insurance – Covering all costs that may arise from urgent medical care and/or emergency treatment in the hospital including potential medical repatriation or death. Must be valid for all Schengen member states and the entire length of your trip. Minimum amount of 30,000 EUR
- For minors (children under the age of 18) traveling without parents or with only one parent a written consent from the parent or legal guardian who is not traveling with the minor (certified by a Notary public) is required
- Birth certificate/marriage certificate
- Proof of funds – Bank account statement(s) from the last 3 months or proof of regular income such as pay slips of the last 3 months or a letter stating that all expenses are fully covered
- Proof of accommodation – Evidence of hotel bookings or travel plans for the entire stay in the Schengen area
- Invitation letter with a signature of the inviting person authenticated by Slovak public notary or a letter of invitation authenticated by Foreign Police in the Slovak Republic. A copy of Slovak ID or residence permit in Slovakia of the inviting friend/relative must also be submitted
- Reference letter from the employer or invitation letter from an individual businessman specifying the nature of the business and authenticated by Slovak public notary or a letter of invitation authenticated by Alien Police in the Slovak Republic specifying the nature of the business and trip
- Invitation letter issued by organizer of any event or official letter issued by employment company of the visa applicant verifying continued employment and purpose of journey to the Slovak Republic
- Other documents demonstrating the purpose of travel and stay in the Slovak Republic (e.g. medical treatment, study visits or special activities shorter than 90 days, etc

As of May 15, 2014, the applicants for Schengen visa are required to provide biometric data (fingerprints) when submitting visa applications. This data is stored in the Visa Information System (VIS). If you have already applied for a Schengen visa in the last 5 years, your data can be reused.
Step 5: Receive your visa
When a decision about your visa application has been reached, you can either:
- Collect your passport from the embassy’s office
- Have your passport sent to your home address. You will need to provide a pre-addressed return envelope with prepaid postage
The decision will be either:
- Approved – your visa will be inside your passport
- Rejected – this would have been for a specific reason. You can appeal the decision within 15 days and there will be a fee of 30 EUR
Common rejection reasons include:
- No invitation letter – if you are being invited to Slovakia by someone or by a company or events organizer, you must provide an invitation letter
- No proof of funds – you must be able to afford your trip and prove that you can do so or prove that your expenses are being paid for
- Passport was not issued within the last 10 years – your passport is invalid if it wasn’t issued within the last 10 years, so you must get a new one before applying for your visa
