Applying for a Germany Schengen Visa from the Philippines
If you are a citizen of the Philippines and you are planning on going to Germany, you will need to apply for a visa to be able to enter and stay in the country.
The Embassy of Germany in Manila processes visa applications, but the receipt of applications has been outsourced to VFS Global in Manila or Cebu. That means you will submit your application to VFS Global.
You can apply up to 6 months before your trip, but the earlier the better! It takes around 1 week for your application to be processed by the embassy from the moment they receive your paperwork. It is not possible to have your application rushed through, so make sure you apply in plenty of time.
Types of Schengen visas offered at the German Embassy in the Philippines
The type of visa you will apply for will depend on why you wish to go to Germany. There are 3 types of visa available:
- Schengen visa (short-stay) – for a holiday or business trip etc for up to 90 days
- National visa (long-stay) – to attend university, work or join a family in Germany etc for over 90 days
If you are simply catching a connecting flight on the way to a different destination, you will need an Airport Transit visa.

Step 5 – Visit a visa application center
On the day of your appointment:
- Aim to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment.
- You must attend the appointment for your visa application. You cannot send someone in your place
- Take a printed copy of your visa application, as well as a valid passport or travel document with at least 2 pages that are blank on both sides
- Bring all supporting documentation (originals and copies)
- If you haven’t paid your visa fee online, you can pay your fees once you get to the centre
At the center, you will also need to submit your fingerprints and photograph. This is known as biometric information collection. Without biometrics information, your visa application will not be processed.
If you miss your appointment on the scheduled day, you will need to book a new appointment after 24 hours from your original appointment date.
After your appointment, your application will be sent to the embassy for processing. They may ask you to attend an interview to clarify the information you have provided. They ask you questions to do this. If this happens, don’t worry, simply answer the questions honestly.
Typical questions include:
- Have you been to Germany before?
- What do you plan to do there?
- Are you going with anyone else?
- How much do you earn?
Don’t jeopardize your Schengen visa interview at the last minute. Use this comprehensive and thorough visa interview guide to crack the visa interview!

Step 6 – Track your application
After you have submitted your application, you will receive an email when a decision has been made or you can purchase the SMS service from VFS Global. You can also track your application’s progress with the tracking tool. Click on the link under “Step 6 – Track your application”:

Key in your reference number and last name:

Step 7 – Collect your passport
Once your passport has been returned to VFS Global, you can pick up your passport in person or have your documents returned to you by courier for an additional fee. If you choose to collect your passport, you must take the following documents:
- Receipt issued by VFS Global
- Your ID
The decision will be either:
- Approved – your visa will be inside your passport
- Rejected – this would have been for a specific reason and you may be able to appeal the decision. See the embassy’s website for more information
Common rejection reasons include:
- You already have a valid Schengen visa – if you have applied for a Schengen visa previously and it was approved, it may still be valid, so check your passport before you apply for a new one
- Purpose of your trip is not clear – you must have a valid reason for traveling to Germany. This could be tourism or business etc., but whatever it is, you must show proof of that reason, for example, a tour itinerary or an invitation to attend a meeting
- No evidence of your intention to return to the Philippines – you must show that you are planning to return home before the expiry of the visa such as proof that you own a home or have a job
