Applying for a Denmark Schengen Visa from India
If you are a citizen of India or you are living there on a permanent basis and can show your residence permit, then applying for a visa for Denmark is easy.
All you have to do is prepare your application and supporting documents and hand them into one of the offices of VFS Global.
VFS Global are responsible for accepting your visa application, but it is the Embassy of Denmark in New Delhi that makes the decision whether to grant your visa or not. Your application will be sent by VFS Global to the embassy once you have submitted it.
It takes around 15 days for applications to be processed, but some cases will require further enquiry or documentation, so the processing time may be longer. You can apply up to 6 months before your trip, so make sure you apply in time.

Step 1 – Identify visa type

Step 3 – Book an appointment
Making appointments with the embassy, consulate or visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself. Step 4 – Pay your fees
The fees are non-refundable and can be paid in cash in the local currency when you complete your application online.

Step 5 – Visit a visa application center
On the day of your appointment:
- Aim to arrive 15 minutes before your appointment
- You must attend the appointment for your visa application. You cannot send someone in your place
- Take all supporting documentation (originals and copies)
- If you haven’t paid your visa fee online, you can pay your fees once you get to the center
- You will also need to submit your fingerprints and photograph. This is known as biometric information collection. Without biometrics information, your application will not be processed
- If you miss your appointment on the scheduled day, you will need to book a new appointment
The embassy may contact you to attend an interview and they may ask questions about your application. Typical questions include:
- Are you meeting anyone in Denmark?
- Are you going to work in Denmark?
- Are you going to any other countries in the Schengen Area?
- What will you do when you return to India?

Step 6 – Track your application
Go to “step 6” and click on the link to track your application online:
Key in the application reference number and your last name:
Step 7 – Collect your passport
After a visa application decision has been made, you can pick up your passport from VFS Global. You will need to take the receipt issued by VFS Global and some ID.
The decision will be either:
- Accepted – you will find your visa attached to one of the pages in your passport
- Rejected – if your application is rejected, you can appeal the decision within 8 weeks
There are different reasons why an application may get rejected:
- Bank statements not included – you must provide the last 3 bank statements, so the embassy can determine whether you can afford the trip
- Fake documents – do not provide fake documents because the embassy will check details such as flight and/or hotel reservations etc. If you do this, it could jeopardize your ability to get a visa now and in the future
- Passport not valid – if your passport is invalid in any way (see below), you must get a new one before making an application for a visa
- No invitation letter – if you are being invited to Denmark by a person to stay with them or a business/company is asking you to attend a conference etc., you must provide an invitation letter
Documents Required
There are checklists on VFS Global’s website for the documents required, so use these when you are getting your documents together. You also need to sign the checklist and submit it as part of your application.
You should also submit photocopies along with original documents.
Documents include:
- Application form completely filled out online – printed and signed
- Visa fee payment receipt
- One recent passport photo – 35×45, not older than 6 months and on a white background (see full photograph specifications)
- Passport – containing at least 2 blank pages, issued within the previous 10 years, valid for at least three months after your trip
- Travel insurance – for all risks such as accident, illness, medical emergency evacuation etc. The insurance has to cover the entire stay in the Schengen territory including the date of arrival & departure and for at least 30,000 Euros
- Certificate of the travel agency confirming the booking of an organized trip or any other proof of travel plans
- Flight reservation including your name. If you are traveling to several Schengen States, proof of intra-Schengen flight reservation, train itinerary or car rental. If you are joining a cruise liner on the onward journey, you should provide the ticket & payment receipt
- Proof of accommodation – Hotel reservations, rental of holiday home or campus residence reservation. If you intend to stay with a family member or a friend, proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation from the host
- Children under 18 years old – parental consent; ID of parents/legal guardians
- Proof of financial status – if employed: payslips x 3 months, employment contract & holiday approval; if self-employed: business registration certificate; if retired: pension statements x 3 months or other proof of income
- Proof of relationship – marriage certificate
- Invitation letter
