    In 2017, a total of 29,257 Schengen visa applications were received worldwide. The number of applications rejected came to 2,481 (8.48%). The Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington received 83 applications and rejected just 1 (1.2%).

    Applying for a Schengen Visa from the United States         

    If you are a non-US citizen, you need a visa to be able to enter and stay in Slovenia. You can do this from the United States if you live in the country on a permanent basis and can prove that you have a legal right to remain.

    You have to make sure you apply at the right Slovenian embassy and consulate. You can apply through one of the visa offices located across the US. You one you will deal with depends on where you live:

    1. Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin – the Consulate General of Slovenia in Cleveland
    2. Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the Pacific Islands – the Consulate General of the Republic of Austria in Los Angeles
    3. All other States, District of Columbia and Puerto Rico – the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington

    Types of Schengen Visas Offered at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington

    There are 2 types of visas that you may apply for. The one you need will depend on the duration of your trip and your reason for traveling to Slovenia:

    1. Short-term Schengen visa type C/A – for stays up to 90 days for the purposes of tourism, business, visiting family/friends or airport transit. This visa may be issued for one, two or multiple entries
    2. Long-term National visa D – for stays exceeding 90 days for the purposes of employment, business, study, research, family unification, residence, etc. This visa is issued for one or multiple entries

    Schengen Visa Application Process at the Embassy of the Republic of Slovenia in Washington

    You need to apply for your visa no more than 3 months and no less than 15 days before your intended departure date. You should aim to submit your application about 3 – 4 weeks before the day of departure. The embassy takes up to 15 days to reach a decision.

    Please note that visa processing time for some nationals is longer than 15 days but not longer than 60 days.

    Inquiries about the status of your application will not be answered earlier than 10 days from the submission of a complete application.

    Step 1: Complete your application

    The first thing you need to do is to complete your application. Go to the embassy’s website and click on: “Consular services, visas”:

    You can download the form in order to complete and sign it.

    Step 2: Make an appointment 

    Next, you need to make an appointment in order to submit your application to the embassy in Washington. All you need to do is send an email to sloembassy.washington@gov.si. In your email, ask the consulate for a day and time which is convenient for you and they will let you know whether this is available. If not, they will offer you another date. Please note, appointment requests less than 5 days in advance will not be accepted.

    Step 3: Prepare your documents

    You need to submit all the required documents for your visa application. If you don’t, it could lead to your application being rejected. It’s advisable to spend time looking at the embassy’s website before you start this part of the procedure.

    You need to provide original documents as well as photocopies of everything, so remember to do that too!

    Documents include:

    1. Valid and signed passport or travel document – issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least 3 months after your return to the US, with at least 2 free pages
    2. Copy of your passport’s data page
    3. Visa application form
    4. 2 recent passport photographs
    5. Valid US permanent resident card valid US resident visa
    6. Flight reservation or other proof of transport
    7. Proof of Schengen travel insurance for €30,000 to cover urgent medical attention, emergency hospital treatment or repatriation for medical reasons, or repatriation of remains
    8. Proof of accommodation – hotel reservation or proof of accommodation if staying with host OR rental agreement, etc
    9. Proof of employment including knowledge of leave of absence and letter stating the reason and length of your trip
    10. Proof of sufficient funds – 3 x bank statements/payslips OR tax return OR proof of pension income
    11. Proof of current address such as driver’s license or utility bill
    12. Birth certificate and consent of parents if a minor is traveling
    13. Invitation letter with host’s ID
    14. Proof of participation in conferences, seminars, workshops, cultural and sport events
    15. Proof of work permit/employment contract
    16. Evidence of enrollment in US university and acceptance letter by Slovenian university
    17. Evidence of sponsorship
    18. Reference letter from employer
    19. Letter of guarantee  signed by the person/company inviting you to Slovenia and notarized by the administrative unit in Slovenia (called Upravna enota)
    20. Prepaid, self-addressed envelope for returning passports

    Step 4: Attend your appointment

    On the day of your appointment, get to the embassy early and remember the following things:

    1. Do NOT forget any of your paperwork – if there is anything missing, your application could be rejected
    2. Dress smartly – to make a good impression, dress appropriately

    The visa officer will examine your application and if they need any further information from you they may ask you extra questions. If they do this, simply answer honestly and be polite.

    1. Have you ever traveled to an EU country before?
    2. Will you be working in Slovenia?
    3. Do you know anyone in Slovenia?
    4. What is your salary?
    5. Has your employer approved your leave?

    You will also pay the relevant fee for your visa. You can pay by money order payable to The Embassy of Slovenia. The fee is non-refundable even if your application is rejected.

    If this is your first time applying for a Schengen visa, you will also have to provide biometric data which is a scan of your fingerprints and a digital photograph.

    Step 5: Receive your visa

    When the embassy has arrived at a decision, you can either collect your passport from their office or have it returned to you by mail.

    There will be 1 of 2 outcomes:

    1. Approved – you will find your visa inside your passport
    2. Rejected – your visa application has been rejected for a reason. You have the right to appeal the decision within 8 days. The appeal must be lodged in written form in Slovene language and there is a fee of $175

    Common rejection reasons include:

    1. Damaged passport – if your passport is damaged in any way, e.g. missing or loose pages, you must obtain a new one before applying for your visa
    2. Work permit missing – if you are going to work in Slovenia, you must provide a work permit to prove that you have a job already in place
    3. You applied for the wrong visa – you must apply for the correct visa. For example, if you are going to Slovenia for a maximum of 90 days, you would apply for a Schengen visa (type C) (see types of visas above)
    4. Proof of employment not included – you must provide evidence of your employment status whether you are employed, self-employed, retired or a student (see above requirements)
