    Step 5: Receive your visa

If you have submitted your application to the embassy in Canberra or the consulate in Sydney, you can check its progress by going to their website.

Once a decision has been reached, you can either:

    1. Pick up your passport in person from the visa office
    2. Receive your passport by mail. You will need to provide a self-addressed prepaid envelope when you submit your application to have your passport returned by mail

You will need to check with the visa office which option is available to you.

    The decision will be either:

    1. Approved – your visa will be inside your passport
    2. Rejected – this would have been for a specific reason and you can appeal the decision

    Common rejection reasons include:

    1. Invalid passport – if your passport is invalid in any way (see above requirements), you will need to obtain a new one before you apply for your visa
    2. No invitation letter – if you are being invited to Portugal by a company or a person, you will need to provide an invitation letter
    3. No proof of residence – if you live in Australia, but you were not born there, you must provide proof of residence
    4. Purpose of trip is not clear – the reason why you are going to Portugal must be made clear to the embassy/consulate. You can do this by providing evidence such as proof of enrollment for study or a trip itinerary for tourism etc
