Applying for a Schengen Visa from Australia

If you were born in Australia, you do not need to apply for a visa to be able to go to Malta. However, if you were born in another country, but you are currently living in Australia permanently, you do need to apply for a Malta visa. You can follow this link to find out if you need to apply for a visa:

    Who Requires A Visa?

If you are from a country whose nationals need a visa, you can do this easily from Australia as long as you can prove that you are living in Australia legally. If you hold a B1 or B2 visa, you must return to the country of your residence to apply from there.

You can submit your application to one of the following visa offices, but you must reside within the jurisdiction of each office:

    1. The High Commission of Malta in Canberra – Australia
    2. The Consulate General of Malta in Sydney – New South Wales
    3. The Consulate General of Malta in Melbourne – Victoria

You must apply through the correct Malta visa office.

Although you will hand your application into one of the above visa offices, it is Identity Malta who will make the final decision about whether to grant your visa or not.

Types of Schengen visas offered at the visa offices in Australia

Depending on why you are going to Malta and the duration of your trip, you can apply for 1 of 3 types of visa:

    1. Schengen visa – type C  if you are travelling for tourism, business, visiting family or friends for up to 90 days in a 180-day period
    2. Airport Transit visa – type A is required when you are connecting through a Schengen country airport and not leaving the airport
    3. National visa – type D for trips over 90 days for business, conference, study or employment etc

How Can I Apply for a Schengen Visa from Australia?

    Step 5: Receive your visa

Once a decision about your visa application has been reached your passport will be returned to you by post or you may be able to collect it from the visa office in person. You should check with the relevant office which method is available to you.

    Common rejection reasons include:

    2. Invalid travel insurance – if your travel insurance is invalid in any way (see above requirements), this will affect the outcome of your application, so make sure you get the right cover
    3. No proof of purpose of visit – you must state why you want to go to Malta. For tourism, you could provide a tour itinerary. For employment, you could provide a work contract. Whatever your reason you must provide evidence
