    If you are a citizen of any of the following countries, you do NOT need a visa to be able to enter and stay in Germany for up to 90 days:

    If you are from any other country, including the Philippines, you must apply for a visa for Germany.

    To do this from Manila, you need to be living in the Philippines on a permanent basis and you must be able to prove that you have the right to reside in the country.

    You have to make sure you apply at the right German embassy and consulate. The Embassy of Germany in Manila have outsourced Schengen visa applications to VFS Global in Manila, so you will submit your application to their office instead. VFS Global will then send your application to the embassy to make the final decision. National visa applications can be applied for directly at the embassy.

    Types of Schengen Visas Offered at the Embassy of Germany in Manila

    There are 2 types of visas and the one you will apply for will depend on the duration of your trip to Germany:

    1. Short-stay (Schengen) visa – for a maximum of 90 days
    2. Long-stay (National) visa – for over 90 days

    You will also need to choose the correct category when you apply for your Germany visa and this will depend on your reason for traveling to Germany:

    Step 1: Make an appointment

    The first thing to do is to make an appointment in order to submit your application with VFS Global or the embassy.

    4. Complete the requested information to register
    5. Log in with your new password

    Appointment at the embassy for National visa applications

    1. Go to their website and click on: “Consular services” and “Visa information”
    2. Click on: “Long-stay (more than 90 days, e.g. to attend university, work or join a family member in Germany”
    3. Scroll down to “Preparing your application” and click on the link to make an appointment
    4. You will be directed to the appointment system of the German Foreign Office in Manila. Choose the correct category of visa and click on: “Continue”
    5. Read the instructions carefully before clicking on: “New appointment”
    6. Enter the requested information and submit. Please take care to enter your data correctly

    You will then be able to make an appointment for your National visa application.

    After your successful registration you will receive 2 emails:

    1. Within 30 minutes, you will receive a confirmation mail with your reference number
    2. Within a couple of weeks, you will receive another email (appointment email) with further details about your allocated appointment

    Step 2: Complete your application

    The next step is to complete your application form. For Schengen visas, go to the embassy’s website and click on: “Consular services” and “Visa information”:

    Step 3: Prepare your documents

    Before you begin to prepare your documents, it’s advisable to spend time looking at what the requirements are for your type of visa. The embassy has document checklists that you could print off to refer to as you proceed through this step:

    1. Tourism

    4. Valid and signed passport issued within the last 10 years and valid for at least 3 months after the departure date from Germany. It also must have 2 blank pages
    5. Old passports (if applicable)
    6. Purpose of travel – Confirmed flight reservation details regarding destination and travel route; details of outward and return journey; hotel booking and confirmation it has already been paid
    7. Bank statements for the last 6 months as proof of sufficient funds
    8. Schengen Travel health insurance valid for all Schengen states for the entire duration of your trip. Must cover at least €30,000
    9. Evidence of ties to the Philippines – Proof of employment: most recent income tax return, certificate of employment to confirm job, income, duration of the working relationship etc and letter of approved leave of absence; If you are self-employed: proof of registration and commercial activity of your company in the Philippines, e.g. income tax returns, bank certificates etc; If you are a pupil/student: school/university certificate and proof of enrollment; If you own real estate property, e.g. original land title, deed of sale
    10. Birth certificate, parental consent and parent’s ID (minors)
    11. Invitation letter with host’s ID
    12. Letter from your employer stating the reason and length of your trip
    13. Proof of admission/CV/explanation of studies to be undertaken (for students)
    14. Proof of participation in conferences, seminars, workshops, cultural and sport events
    15. Proof of work permit/employment contract
    16. Evidence of qualifications

    On the day of your appointment, remember the following things:

    You may also have to provide biometric data which is a scan of your fingerprints and a photograph, especially if this is your first time applying for a visa for Germany. If you have previously provided this data, it can be reused if it is within a 5 year period.

    Step 5: Receive your visa

    Once you have submitted your application, you just need to wait while it is processed. For short-stay (Schengen) visas, you can track the progress.

    1. Go to VFS Global’s website and click on: “Track your application”:

    3. Key in your reference number and last name and you will be able to find out what stage your application is at:

    When a decision has been made, you will be notified by VFS or the embassy and you can arrange to collect your passport from the respective office or you can have it mailed back to you via courier (there is an additional charge for this service).

    If your visa has been approved, you will find it inside your passport. If it has been rejected, you will be told why this is and you have the right to appeal the decision.

    Common rejection reasons include:

    1. Declaration not included – you must provide a declaration to confirm that the embassy informed you of the legal consequences of refusing to provide data or furnishing false or incomplete information about the visa application procedure
    2. Marriage certificate missing – if you are applying for a visa for family purposes, you may have to provide a marriage certificate
    3. Lack of funds – you must provide proof that you can afford your trip such as payslips and/or bank statements etc
    4. Employment contract no provided – if you are going to Germany to work, you must provide evidence that you have a job there
