Applying for Finland Schengen Visa from the United States

If you are a US citizen by birth, you do NOT need a visa to go to Finland. However, if you are a non-US citizen, currently living in the US on a permanent basis, you DO need a visa for Finland.

Applying from the United States is simple, all you need to do is apply at the Finnish Embassy or one of the consulates located in the US.

If you live in the states of Washington, Maryland or Virginia you can apply at the Embassy of Finland in Washington DC.

If you live in any other area, you need to apply at the consulate in Los Angeles or New York. Check the jurisdiction map on the Embassy’s website for more information:

Just click on your area and the system will redirect you to the correct office where you can apply.

Types of Schengen Visas Offered at the Embassy of Finland in Washington DC

Depending on how many days you plan to go to Finland for will determine which type of visa you apply for:

    1. Schengen visa – for stays up to a maximum of 90 days for tourist, business, study, family reasons etc.
    2. National visa – for stays over 90 days for work, student, residence etc. (Please note, you will probably need a residence permit for longer stays, so go to http://residencepermits.finland.fi/ for further information)
    3. Airport Transit visa – if you are transiting through a Schengen country airport

Visas are issued as single, double, or multiple entry which means you are permitted to enter the country once, twice, or unlimited times respectively within the validity of the visa.

Schengen Visa Application Process at the Finnish Embassy in Washington DC

The processing of Schengen visa applications for Finland has been outsourced to VFS Global, so you can submit your application to their office in Washington. Although VFS Global will receive your application, the decision lies with the Consulate General of Finland in New York.

The embassy takes around 10 to 15 days to process Schengen visa applications, although this could increase to 30 or as many as 60 days depending on the circumstances of the application. There is no rush processing available, so it’s best to apply at least 15 days ahead of your trip. You can apply up to 90 days ahead, so don’t leave it too late

Before you apply, spend some time on the Embassy of Finland’s website to understand what you need to do and what documents are required to be submitted along with your visa application. It is not up to the embassy to tell you, it’s down to you to get everything right.

Alternatively, you can check the pages of VFS Global’s website which has comprehensive information on applying for a Schengen visa. Click on the country you wish to apply from and scroll down and choose: “Washington”:

You have 30 days to collect your passport from VFS. If you don’t do so within this time, your passport will be returned to the consulate and you have an additional 30 days to collect it from them.

When you collect your documents from VFS Global, you need to take the original receipt (ICR) and a copy of the ID page of your passport (stapled to the receipt).

If you don’t want to collect your passport or are unable to do so, you can arrange for your passport to be mailed back to you, but you’ll need to pay a courier fee of $30 when you submit your file.

If your visa application has been approved, you’ll find it attached to one of your passport pages. If it has been rejected, it would have been for a specific reason. Applications get rejected for all sorts of reasons, including:

    1. You have been involved in criminal actions in the past
    2. Your employment and income does not match
    3. Passport is older than 10 years
    4. Flight booking missing
    5. Unacceptable birth/marriage certificate

If the embassy feels that you could be a threat to the public due to anything you have been involved with in the past, they will deny your application. Your employment status and income must match and your documents should prove this. If your passport is older than 10 years, you must get a new one before applying for your visa. All documents must be submitted, including flight bookings and if you need to provide a birth/marriage certificate, they should be endorsed by the relevant authorities and/or translated into English, if applicable.
