Applying for a Denmark Schengen Visa from the United Kingdom

If you are a British citizen, you do not need a visa for Denmark. However, if you fall under the following categories, you do need to apply for a visa to be able to enter and stay in Denmark:

    1. not a citizen of a Nordic country
    2. not a citizen of an EU/EEA country
    3. not a family member of an EU/EEA national. Please see
separate page for information on Family members of EU or EEA Nationals and note that family members of a UK national will need a visa
    4. a citizen of a country listed here

If you are applying for a visa from the UK and you are not a British citizen, you must be able to prove that you have a legal right to remain in the UK. If not, you should apply for your visa from your home country.

You have to make sure you apply at the right Danish embassy and consulate. The Embassy of Denmark has outsourced visa applications to VFS Global in the UK, so you will submit your application to one of the VFS offices located in London, Manchester or Edinburgh. VFS Global will send your application to the embassy for processing.

Types of Schengen Visas Offered at the Embassy of Denmark in London

There are different types of visas you can apply for and the one you need will depend on the duration of your trip and your reason for travelling to Denmark:

    1. Short-stay visa – this visa is called a Schengen visa and it is valid for a maximum of 90 days (in a 180 day period) for the purposes of tourism, business, visiting family/friends, conference, EEA/EU national family member
    2. Residence and work permits – if you want to reside in Denmark for the purposes of employment, family reunification, study, research etc, you need to apply for this type of travel authorisation. It is for stays exceeding 90 days

If you have never visited the Schengen area before, a visa is usually issued as single entry which means you can enter the country once during the dates of your visa. If you have been to the Schengen area before, you can apply for 2 or more entries as long as you can provide proof of your previous visit.

Schengen Visa Application Process at VFS Global/the Embassy of Denmark in London

Waiting times for appointments at VFS Global could take several weeks, so you should apply well in advance. You may apply up to 3 months ahead of your departure date.

Visa applications take 15 calendar days to process, but if you are submitting your application into the Manchester or Edinburgh office, you need to add an extra 3 – 4 working days to allow for your case to be sent to the embassy.

In addition, some nationals are subject to prior consultation in one or more Schengen countries, before a visa can be issued. The consultation takes around 8 – 10 days. Please see the list of countries.

Some applications may require further processing, which could take from 30 – 60 days.
