    It’s easy applying for a Schengen visa from Canada as long as you can prove that you have a legal right to stay in the country. If you are a Canadian citizen by birth you don’t even need a visa as long as your trip does not exceed 90 days.

    All you have to do is find the embassy or consulate that deals with visa applications in your area. There are 2 visa offices that you may submit your application to, but each of them has its own jurisdiction:

The Embassy of the Czech Republic in Ottawa – deals with applications from residents of British Columbia, Ontario (only the following counties: New Brunswick, New Foundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, Ontario (Prescott a Russell, Stormont, Dundas a Glengarry, Ottawa-Carleton, Leeds a Grenville, Lanark, Renfrew, Nipissing, Lennox and Addington, Frontenac), Prince Edward Island, Québec, Yukon
    2. The Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Toronto – deals with applications from residents of Ontario (except the districts in the jurisdiction of the Embassy in Ottawa), Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan

    Step 2: Make an appointment

    Making appointments with the embassy, consulate or visa application center is generally free and can be done yourself.     It is not necessary to make an appointment at the embassy in Ottawa. You may submit your visa application without one from 9.00 am to 11.00 am.     If you are submitting your application to the consulate in Toronto, you DO need to schedule an appointment. Please note the following information:

    1. Appointments can only be scheduled on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays between 9.00 am and 11.00 am.
    2. Request an appointment by sending an email to the following address: toronto.appointment@gmail.com
    3. Note:  Appointment can not be booked over the phone and the email is strictly for requesting an appointment; questions sent to this email will not be acknowledged.
    4. Ensure that you book an appointment for each individual applying for a visa. Meaning, if you and a family member(s) are applying, you must book two or more appointments.
    5. When requesting an appointment please provide the following information: First Name, Middle Name/s, Last Name, Type of Visa you are applying for: Schengen Visa, Long Term Visa, Long Term Residence Permit, Employee Card, EU Blue Card, Permanent Residence Permit
    6. Please allow 24 hours to reply to your email; therefore, request  your appointment accordingly

    Step 3: Prepare your documents

    The embassy and consulate’s websites have all the information you need regarding what documents you need to submit for your type of visa. It’s a good idea to spend time looking at this before you start to prepare your documents. Your visa application will not be processed even if you fail to provide just 1 document!

    You should also prepare photocopies as well as providing the original documents, so don’t forget to do that too!

    Documents include:

    1. Visa application form – completed and signed
    2. Passport photographs
    3. Passport or other travel document – must be valid for at least three months after the date of departure from the Schengen zone, at least two empty pages and issued no more than 10 years ago
    4. Proof of intention to leave the territory of the Czech Republic / Schengen Area before the visa expiry – air plane/bus ticket reservation, proof of financial means for the return trip, employment confirmation, real estate ownership confirmation, family relations confirmation etc
    5. Residence permit or Canadia visa (multiple entry) valid for at least 3 months after departing the Schengen area
    6. Travel itinerary/airline reservation. Please note, the purchase of the airline ticket is not required at time of application (the embassy may request proof of purchase at any time)
    7. Proof of travel insurance or health/accident insurance – to cover a minimum of €30,000 (approx., 50,000 CAD) in all Schengen countries for entire duration of visa
    8. Proof of financial means – 3 x bank statements
    9. Proof of accommodation – for example invitation, voucher from travel agency, spa or medical facility, organized trip reservation, itinerary, hotel reservation, confirmation of school or scientific institution on providing accommodation, reservation etc
    10. Letter of invitation to visit the Czech Republic is a form verified by the Alien Police Inspectorate by which the inviting person/company accepts the obligation to fully or partially finance the trip
    11. Letter from employer with details of role, wages etc
    12. Proof of participation in any type of event with invitation letter
    13. Proof of the purpose of the trip – for example invitation, voucher from travel agency, spa or medical facility, organized trip reservation, itinerary, ticket for a congress, fair or seminar, business relations confirmation, registration for negotiations, conference, seminar, official presentation, tournament, school acceptance letter, hosting agreement
    14. Work permit issued by the Czech Labor Office and work contract, contract with a cultural or sport institution

    On the day of your appointment, get to the visa office early. If you miss your appointment, you will have to reschedule. Please remember to take all your documents along with you to ensure that your visa application will be processed and/or won’t be rejected. It’s also wise to dress the part – don’t turn up in shorts and a t-shirt!

    If you have never applied for a Schengen visa before, you will have to provide biometric data which is a photograph and a scan of your fingerprints. If you have previously provided this data, it can be reused as long as your new application is within a 5 year period.
